Tour Itinerary:
1. House of the Virgin Mary – A Sacred Pilgrimage Site
Our journey begins with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the final residence of Mary, the mother of Jesus. According to tradition and John 19:26-27, Jesus entrusted His mother to the Apostle John, who is believed to have brought her to Ephesus for safety.
This peaceful shrine, recognized by the Vatican as a pilgrimage site, offers visitors a chance for reflection and prayer. Many believe that the spring waters near the house have healing properties, adding to the spiritual ambiance.
2. Ephesus Ancient City – Walking Through Biblical History
Next, we travel to the heart of ancient Christianity: Ephesus. This remarkably preserved Greco-Roman city is one of the most significant biblical sites, mentioned several times in the New Testament.
🔹 Celsus Library & Marble Streets – Walk through the same streets where Paul the Apostle preached (Acts 19:8-10).
🔹 The Great Theater – The very place where Demetrius led a riot against Paul (Acts 19:23-41), shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
🔹 The Church of Mary – Site of the 3rd Ecumenical Council (AD 431), which proclaimed Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God).
Ephesus was not only an important trade hub but also a center for early Christianity, where Paul wrote his famous Epistle to the Ephesians.
3. Basilica of St. John – The Resting Place of the Beloved Disciple
A short drive from Ephesus takes us to the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, built over the traditional tomb of John the Apostle.
According to Christian tradition, John spent his final years in Ephesus, caring for Mary and spreading the Gospel. The Gospel of John was likely written here, reflecting deep theological insights into the life of Christ.
Here, you can explore:
✅ The tomb of St. John, where early Christians honored his legacy.
✅ The ruins of the 6th-century Byzantine basilica, once one of the grandest churches of its time.
✅ A panoramic view of Ephesus and Selçuk, offering breathtaking scenery.
4. Temple of Artemis – One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Our final stop is the remains of the Temple of Artemis, once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Though only a few columns remain today, this site once stood as a massive pagan temple dedicated to Artemis (Diana), the goddess of fertility.
In Acts 19, Paul’s teachings about Christ caused unrest among the Ephesians, who were deeply devoted to Artemis. The temple’s significance helps us understand the challenges early Christians faced while spreading the Gospel in a city filled with pagan traditions.
